Copa America 2024 Groups

Just about every spot in Copa America 2024 has been secured, with just two openings that will come down to CONCACAF playoff matches. Argentina is the defending champion, but the U.S. will host the event for the second time, the first coming back in 2016.

The opening match will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta and the tournament’s final will be played at Hard Rock Stadium in south Florida.

Copa America 2024 Betting Favorites

Most of the pundits in the Copa America betting world seem to believe Argentina will once again prevail in the tournament. The country is consistently atop every sportsbook in our above table’s list of most likely teams to win.

Brazil and Uruguay will not be easy outs, however, and even teams with longer odds like Mexico, the U.S. and Ecuador could make a run.

Argentina

Although he has played against lesser competition than he is used to in Europe, Lionel Messi appears to still be as dominant as ever in his play for MLS’ Inter Miami FC. It is unclear whether he will play this summer at Copa America. Still, MI bettors will see the nation be highly regarded by oddsmakers whether or not the superstar is in uniform.

Brazil

The nation has struggled in high-profile events of late, but Brazil has appeared in back-to-back Copa America finals and won the title in 2018. If Neymar ends up playing for Brazil, that will make them a much more enticing choice. If they don’t, be wary of a significant bet on the team.

United States

Copa America will be a huge test for the Americans, who will host the 2026 World Cup just two years after hosting the 2024 Copa America. Expectations will be high for one of the most talented rosters in recent memory, headlined by Christian Pulisic. Expect to see artificially impacted odds on U.S. games once the tournament arrives, as many American fans will simply put their money behind the team for pride.

Past Copa America winners

Argentina not only is the most recent winner of the tournament but the nation is tied with Uruguay for the most Copa America titles with 15. The first Copa America (then called the South American Championship) was won by Uruguay back in 1916.

Copa America Bet Types

The wonderful part about Copa America betting in MI is that, like online casino play, there is a wide variety of options. Both die-hard fans of the game and casual sports bettors can take advantage of a range of markets throughout the tournament.

Tournament Winner

Often one of the most common types of bets on Copa America, Michiganders can use the table on this page above as a guide for considering the top options to put money on. Argentina will be the likely favorite at the outset, especially if Lionel Messi decides to play.

Brazil is being viewed as the second-best team entering the tournament as of now. The sheer talent level makes them a frequent pick of soccer bettors. The U.S. team will have high expectations going into the tournament with the amount of talent on the squad, but the Americans are not considered among the top 3 favorites by any major Michigan sportsbook.

Group Winners

You can review the breakdown of groups in the table on this page, and Gamble Online Michigan will update the table once the final two spots are secured after CONCACAF playoff matches.

One reason the U.S. is not as strong of a favorite as some might expect is they are within a difficult group. Uruguay, Panama and Bolivia will all be difficult matchups for the United States. Group winners would be a worthwhile investment for those who want early action in the tournament.

Knockout Stage

A good section for bettors who want some early action but don’t feel the most confident in a specific country. Picking a team to advance to the knockout stage does not mean they have to win their group, it just means they need to emerge as one of the two best teams in that group.

Knockout stage betting might be particularly desirable if you have some longshot bets that you feel strongly about and want to see early returns.

Top Goalscorer

As simple as it sounds, many MI sportsbooks will offer odds on which player will be the top goal scorer throughout the tournament. Of course, the further a player advances in the tournament, the more likely they are to end up at the top of the goal list.

Think hard about the strength of the team the goal scorer you choose, as an early elimination will make the honor increasingly unlikely.

Moneyline

Many bettors prefer to go match-by-match with their Copa America betting, which is when moneyline bets come into play. A moneyline bet is quite simply just which team you believe will emerge victorious. Keep in mind that the group stage could have draws, adding extra odds to a moneyline bet.

Most matches will have each team’s odds at winning as well as the draw odds, so consider what you feel most confident in.

Both Teams to Score

For fans not looking to pick a winner, wagering on whether both teams will score a goal is a common way to add stakes to a Copa America match. Choosing BTTS yes means your wager will hit if each team finds the back of the net at least once. Vice versa, BTTS no means you believe at least one of the squads will be held scoreless for the match.

Correct Score

If you are convinced the match will end 2-1 in favor of one side, going after the correct square markets provides a great opportunity. The rarer the score, the higher the odds. While these can be extremely lucrative for lucky bettors, it generally is a very difficult wager to hit.

Copa America Strategies

Given that each Copa America team has players competing in domestic leagues all over the world, it can be hard to keep track of all the latest updates on the roster. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you begin mapping out your betting plans for Copa America.

Underdogs

Argentina may seem like the best pick given the difference between its odds and the rest of the field, but research some of the less likely countries. A winning bet on a lesser favorite could be worth hundreds of dollars more than a win with a favorite.

Team Chemistry

Some rosters might look on paper like they will be elite, but have not developed enough of the chemistry necessary to find success. When evaluating two teams, try to understand how many of their national team players have experience on a major stage like Copa America. Some players who are under an international spotlight for the first time can see their performance decline.

Home-Field Advantage

One thing working in the U.S. team’s favor is that every match will be played within the continental United States. If you see a match as relatively even between the Americans and another nation, this could be a deciding factor. Plenty of road fans will pack the stadiums both from in and outside of the U.S. but expect American fans to come out in full force.

History of Copa America

The first official Copa America tournament was held back in 1916 when it was then known as the South American Championship. The tournament was held exclusively in South America until 2016 when the United States hosted the expanded Copa America Centenario, which featured 16 nations as opposed to the standard 12.

Argentina and Uruguay have won the most Copa America titles, with each claiming 15 over the event’s history. The U.S. has appeared in four Copa Americas, with the most recent being a semi-final appearance in 2016.
