Even though there were delays in building, Gun Lake Casino's retail location opened in February 2011. The deliberation was due to a court case regarding the federal government's choice to give the land to the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians. Lawsuits caused the wait, but once the casino opened, it never closed, and all lawsuits were thrown out in 2018.
There were over 1,600 slot machines, 33 table games, a food court, a cafe with 225 seats, a few bars, lounges, and a venue for live entertainment in the first casino. Gun Lake Casino went through a $76 million development in 2017, making it almost twice as big. The remodel included a buffet, a high-limit gaming room, and the Stage 131 performance area.
In the end, 73,000 square feet were added to the 83,000-square-foot building that was already operating. There are 42 table games and 2,050 video games in the casino today. Gun Lake also has an eating room and lounge for employees.
Since it opened, Gun Lake Casino has been run by a company connected to Station Casinos in Las Vegas, Nevada, and private owners from Michigan. But the tribal group took over in 2018. Its deal with Station Casinos to run the casinos was over as of that year.
Gun Lake Casino announced in 2019 that it would add another 72,000 square feet to its current 156,000-square-foot building. As part of the increase, 450 more slot machines, 12 more table games, and a more extensive smoking area would be added. The Stage 131 Sportsbook & Lounge at Gun Lake Casino, which opened in October 2020, was built out of a part of Stage 131.
The tribal band also made a deal with Pennsylvania's Parx Casino to run a retail sportsbook and an online and mobile sportsbook and casino. In April 2021, the online casino gambling service opened. As of August 2021, the online sports betting operation did the same.
In the past, Parx Casino and its software partner GAN had opened online gaming sites in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, meaning a lot of expertise behind the partnership. Gun Lake also made it clear in April 2021 that the operation would build a six-story Aquadome and a motel and resort with 250 rooms on the land.
The Aquadome is planned to have three pools and can be changed into a place for concerts. On May 19, 2022, Gun Lake started building the addition. As designed, the project to grow will be finished by March 2025.
