The Michigan MAC Trophy series kicks off with Eastern Michigan traveling to play Central Michigan in a match-up of 2-2 teams. On Sunday, there are teams going in lots of different directions. Will the Chargers get out of their own way against the Raiders? And can the Miami Dolphins avenge last season’s playoff loss to the Bills?
Best Bets of the Weekend for All Sports Sept. 30-Oct. 1
Eastern Michigan at Central Michigan Best Bet:
Central Michigan -7.5 BetMGM
Both the Eagles and Chips are 2-2 opening up MAC play. This is the first game in the Michigan MAC Trophy series, which goes to the Michigan school that wins the round-robin meetings between the three schools (Western Michigan is the other).
EMU is coming off a 21-0 loss to Jacksonville State. Running back Samson Evans is closing in on the career TD record at the school, but the Eagles have struggled at quarterback.
Meanwhile, Central Michigan has two quarterbacks: Bert Emanuel Jr. the son of the NFL veteran, and Jase Bauer who was the MAC West Division Offensive Player of the Week after putting up five TDs in a win over South Alabama last week.
EMU hasn’t beat Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant since 2011. Take the team with the better quarterback to cover at home.
Dolphins at Bills Best Bet:
Buffalo -3 at DraftKings
We were all scoreboard watching Sunday as the Dolphins rang up a record 70 points in a win over the Broncos. The Dolphins stats to this point are ridiculous, wide receiver Tyreek Hill has 412 yards and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has 1,024 through the air.
So, this sets up perfectly for a Dolphins let-down. The Bills are still the Bills, the defending AFC East Division champs and the team that beat Miami in the playoffs last year 34-31. Last I checked, Bills QB Josh Allen was still fantastic and running back James Cook has become a factor in the running game.
Miami is 3-0 against the spread this season. I love the Bills at home. Even though the Dolphins scored 70 last week, the points don’t carry over this week.
Raiders at Chargers Best Bet:
Chargers -5.5 at FanDuel
While a lot of college football games swing on emotion, NFL games swing on belief. The Raiders have to be questioning what’s going on as off-the-field issues swirl around the franchise and Coach Josh McDaniel’s smarts are being questioned nationally after kicking a late FG last week when his team was down eight points and then saying it was a two-score game. Coach, we’ve had the two-point conversion for a long time.
There’s a saying in the NFL though “Chargers gonna Charger.” LA just seems to find ways to lose games at the end.
The Chargers are now dealing with the loss of star wide receiver Mike Williams to a torn ACL and running back Austin Ekeler has been out with an ankle injury. Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo was in concussion protocol after the Sunday Night loss to the Steelers, but I would think he will play Sunday.
The Chargers have to be feeling better after beating the Vikings in the final seconds and they still have the better QB in Justin Herbert. I believe in LA for this week.
