NHL: Looking at the Over/Under Point Totals for Each Team Entering 2023-24 Season

Highlights

  • The Vegas Golden Knights are defending Stanley Cup champions after beating the Florida Panthers in five games. It was their first Stanley Cup title.
  • The 2023-2024 NHL Preseason starts Saturday with games in Australia.
  • Detroit has made moves to improve but is still expected to struggle in the NHL’s Atlantic Division.

There will be hockey Down Under on Saturday night or Sunday morning -- depending on your time zone. The National Hockey League is opening up pre-season with four games involving three teams (Kings, Coyotes and Blues) playing in Melbourne, Australia.

They will be the first NHL games ever played in the Southern Hemisphere.

Detroit opens up its preseason schedule Tuesday, Sept. 26 hosting Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Detroit hasn’t made the playoffs in seven years.

Atlantic Division

After a historic regular season in 2022-2023, the Boston Bruins are retooling after star Patrice Bergeron retired and trading Taylor Hall. The Sabres have the longest playoff drought in the NHL, having not advanced in 12 years. The Red Wings have focused on improving a power play that ranked in the bottom half of the league.

Metropolitan Division

Carolina is the team to beat. The Hurricanes just extended captain Jordan Staal and resigned both standout goalies. The Devils were the team surprise team in the NHL last year led by Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier, but they won’t be able to sneak up on anyone anymore.

Central Division

The Avalanche had 109 points last year and were a Cup contender, but were upset by Seattle in the first round of the playoffs. Dallas brings back nine players with 10 or more goals in the regular season. All eyes will be on Chicago first-round draft pick Connor Bedard to see how he fares in his rookie year.

Pacific Division

Edmonton features NHL superstar Connor McDavid, who had 64 goals and 153 points, but the Oilers need to improve on defense. Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner struggled in the playoff series loss to Vegas. Speaking of the defending champs, Vegas traded standout Reilly Smith to free up some cap space, but still have 10 of their top scoring forwards back.
