It’s the 2023 home opener for the 1-0 Detroit Lions Sunday coming off an exciting win over defending Super Bowl champions Kansas City in Week 1. The Lions host the Seattle Seahawks at 1 p.m. at Ford Field, looking to take down the birds for the first time since 2012. The game is a sellout. Seattle outscored Detroit 48-45 last year and never punted the entire game, so the Lions defense will have to step up to ensure a W for Detroit.

What a performance by the Lions in the NFL Kickoff Game. Rookie defensive back Brian Burns returned an interception for a touchdown and the Lions upset the Chiefs on their home field. Lions quarterback Jared Goff threw for 253 yards and a touchdown and running back David Montgomery set the tone with 74 yards and a scoring run. The Lions are still the favorite at Michigan sportsbooks to win this game and claim the NFC North Division title.

Injury Report: The Lions listed four players on their injury report on Wednesday, OT Taylor Decker, DB Khalil Dorsey, DB Emmanuel Moseley and C Frank Ragnow.

Seattle Seahawks

After making the playoffs last year, the Seahawks started off with a dud at home, losing to the Rams 30-13. Seattle was the biggest favorite to lose straight up in Week 1. Quarterback Geno Smith was the AP Comeback Player of the Year after a rough start to his career with the New York Jets. Smith has one of the game’s best receivers in DK Metcalf, but the defense has struggled. They allowed 426 yards of offense to the Rams in Week 1.

Injury Report: The big injury for the Seahawks is OT Charles Cross. He did not practice Wednesday. The Seahawks also listed LB Boye Mafe and DE Mike Morris as not practicing Wednesday and S Jamal Adams and LB Devin Bush were limited.

• The Seahawks finished 7-10 against the spread in 2022, while the Lions went 12-5. The Seahawks lead the all-time series 12-5 and have won the last five games.
• When the Lions beat the Packers in the last game of the 2022 regular season, that win sent the Seahawks to the playoffs. Seattle was defeated by San Francisco in the Wild Card Round.
• Seattle’s defense ranked No. 30 in the NFL last season against the run and 14th against the pass.

No team had a better Week 1 win than the Lions, while no team may have had a more disappointing loss than the Seahawks. Seattle is still a team that struggles on defense and is one-dimensional on offense, they count on Smith to move around in the pocket and make plays. It’s troubling that Seattle scored 48 points against the Lions last year, but this is a much improved Lions defense. They are better on the back end and better at covering. Metcalf is still a tough match-up for anyone, but as long as he doesn’t go off for a monster game the Lions should win this game by a touchdown at least.

Blowouts don’t happen that often in the NFL, but this looks like it has the making of one. The Week 1 games were decided by an average of just over 11 points. Detroit has won six of their last seven games dating back to last season by an average margin of victory of 12.6 points.
